Gliomas are formed when the glial cell that is the cells that surround and support the nerves and help in the working of the CNS grow uncontrollably. They usually develop in the brain but can also develop in the spinal cord. They are the most common type of malignant brain tumour. They can further be classified as astrocytoma, oligodendroglioma, glioblastoma and ependyoma.
Meningioma is a type of brain tumour that form in meninges which includes the three layers of tissue that covers and protects the brain as well as the spinal cord. They originate from the arachnoid cells which are the cells present within the one of the layers of the membrane. Most of the meningiomas are benign. They are mostly found near the top and outer curve of the barin. Spinal meningiomas are rare.
Schwannoma is a type of tumour of the nerve sheath. It can occur at any ange and anywhere in your body. It is the most common type of peripheral nerve tumour. It is mostly benign. It generally originates from a single bundle known as the fascicle within the main nerve and displaces the rest of the nerve. They generally form a painless lump but they can lead to nerve damage and loss of muscle control.
The abnormal growth of cell in the pituitary gland is known as the pituitary tumour or pituitary adenoma. The pitutray gland is a small gland located at the base of the brain below the hypothalamus. It controls and regulates the relsese of various hormones which are involved in growth, metabolism, stress response and functioning of sex organs. Most pitutray tumours are benign. These tumours can effect the functioning of the gland either increasing or decreasing the production of hormone compared to the required level and this can eventually cause other serious problems.
Medulloblastoma is a cancerous tumour which effects the cerebellum, the region that controls the balance, coordination and other complex functions. It generally effcts the central part rather than the outer part of the cerebellum. It generally effects childrens and teens. These tumours grow quickly and can spread to other parts of the brain as well as the spinal cord through the cerebrospinal fluid.
CNS lymphoma is an aggressive cancer that develops in the central nervous system. The tumours may form in the brain, spinal cord or the cerebrospinal fluid. It is caused when the lymphocytes that travel to the brain become malignant. Having weakened nervous system increases the risk of CNS lymphoma like in patients suffering from AIDS.
Craniopharyngiomas are rare tumours. They are generally benign. They can effect the regions of the CNS like the hypothalamus, cranial nerves, third ventricle. As it effects the cranial nerves which has role in vision so eventually it might impair the vision. Also it can effect the functioning of the endocrine system which may lead to hormonal disbalances.
Metastatic brain tumour is a type of brain tumour which is caused when a malignant tumour in other part of the body spreads to the brain. They mostly spraed from lungs, breast or skin. Once these tumours reach the brain they form multiple tumours in the brain. They are an important cause of morbidity and mortality in patients.
